Let's support independent businesses #1 - Clare from ColourBloc Photography

Hi, Sadie here!

As a small business I meet many other small businesses through a number of ways - networking (ugghh, it has to be done sometimes!!), markets and events, photoshoots, collaborations and support groups…and even meeting each other on Instagram, like today’s interviewee!

Through my little network of small business friends and associates I witness first hand how passionate, brave, hard-working, inspiring, talented and successful these people are. I know from my own experience how tricky it is to work for yourself, and juggle the gazillion things each week can bring - silly things like working out the best packaging supplier, designing your own logo - working out how to take the best product shots, buying your own website domain. A lot of grafting goes into the unglamorous ‘behind the scenes’ of running a small business.

So before I waffle on too much, basically I want to share some of the small businesses I know, so that you can learn about them, support them, and be inspired by them to even follow your own small business pursuits.

You’ll find they’re mostly female entrepreneurs, though there is the odd male entrepreneur in my address book - I will share them, too!

Today’s first ever independent business interview is Clare from ColourBloc Photography. She and I met when I visited Brighton last year - she messaged me on Instagram and we met the following morning for a super exciting impromptu photoshoot on Brighton Pier!

Clare Colourbloc photography

Hi! I’m Clare, a freelance photographer specialising in product, lifestyle and social media at ColourBloc Photography. I live in Brighton with my husband and our very own ‘Sadie’ aged six!

Describe your work in three words: Colour, contrast and composition

Tell me a little bit about how you started out? I studied architecture at university having always had an appreciation for line, shape and form but ultimately my heart was in photography and 18 years later – here I am, still loving it!

Before I starting ColourBloc Photography in 2018 I worked as a press photographer for years which was an eye opener, meeting people from all walks of life. The variety was fast, photographing anything from the Her majesty the Queen to illegal cannabis factories with police.

What’s the scariest thing you have ever done? Hands down, doing a skydive over Lake Taupo in NZ, something I’d never wanted to do (laughs nervously) I’m not even sure why I did it but I have to say it was totally exhilarating.

What do you love best about your business?

1. The sense of satisfaction I get from creativity
2. Being my own boss
3. I love that clients tend to seek me out for my colourful style of working.

Halloween spooky skull and bone jewellery - from the Shh archives!!

Here’s another trip down Shh memory lane for the creepiest time of the year - Halloween…

As I mentioned in my last blog post, I used to have a thing for skull jewellery - mostly bright, colourful skull jewellery! And in the theme of Halloween I had a little poke around in my old Shh by Sadie photos and pulled out a few pix of the skull necklaces, bracelets and goodness knows what else that I used to make….!!

Skull jewellery was quite popular at the time, in around 2010 - 2011, especially the colourful howlite stone skull beads, and I sold a lot of this kind of bracelet and necklace at markets and through stockists in New Zealand like Rex Royale, Emma and The White Room Gallery (these were some of my first ever stockists).

I also made beads from polymer clay and strung them into bones necklaces - they were super best sellers, too. At one point I couldn’t make enough clay bones - pink ones, blue ones, navy ones - glitter ones!!

These clay necklaces featured in editorial and advertising campaigns for New Zealand designer Emma, NZ magazine Thread, and fashion shows. I even remember being in Brisbane and people complimenting me on my bones necklaces and shyly saying “I made it”. Aww.

Another popular skull style was the “Skull N Rope” necklace. It was a combination of rope, which I wrapped with wire, and the colourful howlite skulls I loved so much.

Absolutely GORGEOUS style blogger Noha Nabil wore my pink and yellow Skull N Rope necklace and I nearly fainted.

One other memory of these good ol’ days was being in a bar in Wellington, The Southern Cross, and a staff member was wearing one of my Skull N Rope necklaces, but I was too shy to say “hey, I made that necklace” - and afterwards I wished I had!

Anyway, that’s today’s little trip down memory lane. What do you think of the skull and bone necklaces?

As you can see, I was still very much learning to take good photos in those days! ;-) But it was an exciting time for skulls and Shh by Sadie.

Day of the Dead colourful skull jewellery - flashbacks from the Shh archives!
day of the dead editorial fashion photoshoot

Here’s a little trip down memory lane for this Halloween season. Here we have photos from the very first photo shoot that I collaborated with stylist Sopheak Seng for. And I can remember now how absolutely thrilled I was to be involved!

Sopheak styled this Day of the Dead fashion editorial for a New Zealand magazine, and when I popped in to take a peek behind the scenes I just COULD NOT BELIEVE how detailed and amazing the set was - there were flowers, candles, fruit, furniture and colourful props galore.

While I was there I saw hair and makeup artist Hil Cook creating the most AMAZING hair styles using wool and oh my goodness I felt like I was Ugly Betty sneaking a peek behind the fashion curtain. It was so flipping exciting.

At the time I used a lot of skull beads, spikes, charms and trinkets in my jewellery designs, and so the photoshoot was the dream collaboration. I loaned a selection of colourful necklaces and bracelets and couldn’t wait to see the final photographs.

Below you can see more photos from the shoot, and I’ve trawled RIGHT back into the depths of my computer and pulled out some pix of the skull jewellery I used to make, too.

Ahhh, such fun times!
